We are all serfs and sharecroppers now.

So Joanns went out of business in the US. This was a huge big-box craft supply store and has had alarming ricochet effects, so I started researching private equity.

I can't even wrap my head around how it works, but the gist is this: where you live, what you wear, the goods you use, the food you eat, your job, your bank account, basically everything central to your everyday life, is owned by a small group of people who purchase public companies, take them private, shift around debt, run them into the ground, and run away with any profits to their next scheme. I am astounded this is legal.

If you are currently gainfully employed, you are a bird on a wire. Your livelihood, your pension, could and will most likely evaporate on the whim of a select few. This isn't even taking AI or government layoffs into the equation.

We are all owned, we are slaves, and there is no political party willing or capable of solving this problem. They're owned, too. In fact, the more I learn about private equity, the more I finally understand what happened in that closed-door Congress meeting in 2008 when a bailout was on the line. The select few went in and explained that they owned everything, and if they went down, the entire economy went down. And they got their bailout, and nothing was changed.

Excuse me if I think this is a bigger problem than Taylor Swift.

This has been the case since the 1980s.

It's been like this since the '90s, at least.

Ignorance was bliss, eh? Welcome to the miserably aware club.

That's how Mitt Romney made his money.

Whenever a company is bought out, it's usually this. Which is why we don't have ToysRUs anymore.
