Is this game actually good?

(Anonymous) 2025-07-22 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
It won like a million awards and is considered revolutionary, but why? All I hear is that the romance is generic and annoying. Is it a good game if you just play it without romancing anyone?

You can absolutely play it without romancing anyone. Though I would say the romance isn't so much annoying (especially after the bugfixes) as it is occasionally cringy, but i find this to be the case in more or less all games.

As for whether it's good: it is pretty good but that obviously also depends on your preferences. One thing that's definitely not for everyone is that it's turn-based combat, so fights can take a pretty long time (and I played it on console so the action wheel was a bit of a learning experience). Turn based games are just not everyone's cup of tea.

What I do like about it a lot is that you can play through the plot in a myriad of difference ways, you have a lot of choices and can actually get vastly different experiences based on them. And if character creation isn't your thing, you can also just play it as one of the companion characters.
So for RPG standards, it's pretty great. If you're more into linear action or shooter games, it's obviously not the first choice though.

full disclosure: I'm not a DnD person, at all. I like open-world games, though, so after watching my housemate play it, I gave it a shot.

it's actually a pretty damn good game. better than the last 3 Assassins Creed games and I still played and enjoyed(ish?) them. I was able to adapt to the system pretty easily since I cut my teeth on turn-based JRPGs, but not knowing how the dice rolls happening inside the CPU affected damage or combat still annoyed me (and I will def not be playing DnD anytime soon). there's a metric fuckton of content, the characters are all interesting, and you don't have to know a lick of lore to still grasp what's going on. and no, you don't have to romance anyone. the only thing you really have to worry about with the companions is making sure none of them hate you enough to leave. if you play goodie-goodie you'll have a hard time keeping Astarion's approval up, but don't lose him since he's broken at high levels and sneak-attacking in every boss battle for massive damage is the only way I didn't die sometimes.

anyway. good game, do recommend, and coming in late to the fandom means you may be lucky and not have to engage horny Astarion fanthings as much as you would have a year ago.

It's a beautiful game, and CRPGs are not known for their budgets so it stands out. This thing has mocapped actors and is fully voice acted. The romances' are great, the characters are delightful and they have fun and interesting arcs.

The biggest downside, to me, is that it uses 5e DnD rules which can get boring if you've played it for 10 years like I have.

But yeah, no, it is a very good game. And more importantly it's a very accessible game in an often inaccessible genre.
