You can absolutely play it without romancing anyone. Though I would say the romance isn't so much annoying (especially after the bugfixes) as it is occasionally cringy, but i find this to be the case in more or less all games.

As for whether it's good: it is pretty good but that obviously also depends on your preferences. One thing that's definitely not for everyone is that it's turn-based combat, so fights can take a pretty long time (and I played it on console so the action wheel was a bit of a learning experience). Turn based games are just not everyone's cup of tea.

What I do like about it a lot is that you can play through the plot in a myriad of difference ways, you have a lot of choices and can actually get vastly different experiences based on them. And if character creation isn't your thing, you can also just play it as one of the companion characters.
So for RPG standards, it's pretty great. If you're more into linear action or shooter games, it's obviously not the first choice though.
