I never took part in those, but I remember reading those and agreeing.

There's a subreddit for my fandom and new fans come in there all the time with "I have an idea for a fanfic (insert Mary Sue OC plot)!" and I just...click away, shaking my head, because I'm not going to yuck someone's joy, but it's so cringe. I'm not sure if the existence of these comms back in the day kept some people from writing shitty fic or it's just a rite of passage.

EH discovering those communities kept me from sharing my fanfictions for over 20 years now for fear of being mocked (I got severely bullied IRL when I was in school. I don't need that energy in fandom, too) so I guess it kept at least some people to participate in fandom. :/
