Patterns in your favourite characters and ships

[personal profile] iff_and_xor 2025-07-26 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)

Inspired by #3, are there any character types or ship dynamics you find yourself drawn to again and again?

Do you remember the first one you liked? Do you seek out new ones that follow that pattern?

The only discernable pattern I have is 1st fave/2nd fave in the series usually, sometimes I'll ship characters that aren't my top 2 faves together but I still obvs love them enough to ship them. But dynamic and gender permutation varies wildly across the board, I have slightly more m/f ships due to getting into shipping from a young age and growing up in a time of pretty rigid heteronormativity in media, but my m/m and f/f are pretty equally tied in numbers these days.

I'd say I mostly tend to ship pairs that have the capacity to be happy together in the long term, whether they're canon or not as well as if canon stops them from being in each others lives for whatever reason(the potential for a happy ending was there even if canon didn't give me that). But every now and then I do get a truly off-the-wall toxic ship where I am there for the unrelenting mess and agony of them being doomed in some way, or just straight up bad for one another. But 9/10, happy ships for me.

Villains. I like villains. There are a few types I especially like: pure evil but brilliant, tragic villains, heroes turned villains (and vice versa), villains who start out with good goals, female villains, and villain teams.

I also like full-on heroes, especially self-sacrificing ones or ones with traumatic backstories.

In ships, I like villainxvillain and villainxhero ships. I also like ships where they were friends before or have a long-term bond prior that develops into romance. And I like ships where dynamics are switched up (boss is the more submissive one, woman is more experienced than man, etc.).

Character types: I really like the tragic figures who got done wrong by the world in general and for ships I like that character and the one person who stood by them through it all and never abandoned them.

I am a sucker to classical rivals/antagonistic towards each other to lovers/friends.

Also my fave dynamic - broken people who are better together

I read that last line as "broken people who are broken together" and was like "me too!" and then reread it and said a sad "oh" of realization. Haha. But your way is good too.

bickering old married couple

(Anonymous) 2025-07-26 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
But like, not actually married. Just they bicker and are kind of mean to each other but in that loving way. Very GenX of me, according to the youngins on the internet XD

Characters who act super tough but are secretly really emotional and love deeply (or become that way). Vegeta was definitely the first example of that.

Ohhhh good one. I like those too and Vegeta was one of my first media crushes too so I see where you are coming from.

I still love him, lol. I should watch the new series.

codependent people

(Anonymous) 2025-07-26 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I really like that unhealthy "we can't survive without each other" or at the very minimum "we are noticeably better people with each other." Super creepy and unhealthy irl but my catnip in fandom.

What's frustrating is it overlaps with "I will murder entire planets to save you/you are the only person who matters" which is not something I care for.

Basic bitch pattern: introverted and aloof x flirtatious and extraverted. I like the "you're stupid" "I know" dynamics, sue me

I've always enjoyed shipping the 2 best friends together, I think because of Stargate SG-1. The bully/victim pairing (not sure how else to put this, essentially the Drarry dynamic) has always fallen flat for me.

I hate the bully/victim pairings. I won't shun anyone for liking it or anything, but it is just a very big Nope for me.

Agreed, especially when the pairing is about making the bully look a lot deeper and interesting than they actually are. Like yes sometimes the bully character can have sympathetic qualities but I've never seen any fanfiction that actually makes the bully more likeable without turning them into a different person. Like...it's a bully, what else can you do with them? They're shitty by definition, unless there's a moment where they make a big change (like Cordelia in Buffy). And even those can be mishandled terribly.

Yes, best friend ships are among my favourites! Like, I'm not a fan of Drarry, but Harry/Ron? Yes, please.

Immortals! Either one or both immortal.

Character types: Characters with identity issues are catnip to me. First one I liked: Terra from Final Fantasy VI. I don't really seek this out; it's just something I reliably latch onto and enjoy when watching media.

Ship dynamics: I don't really have a consistent pattern. Probably, at a very broad level, I tend to like "friends to lovers" ships (including "childhood friends" type ships) -- well, at least more than the population more generally does. But I don't think it's something I NEED for shipping or which automatically makes me hit the ship button; I just notice it's a common feature among maybe 70% of my ships -- but then again, it's a very broad trope so even that isn't all THAT surprising. And a lot of my friends-to-lovers ships have very different friends dynamics: friends who were once close and grew apart, rough-housing friends, old friends who met each other fairly late in life, teammates, BFFs, lord/vassal or master/servant where the vassal has been serving the lord for a long time and feels comfortable being quite blunt with the lord, friends that started out as rivals but then forged a bond through fire, etc.

First one of this type that I liked? Probably Cogsworth/Lumiere and Bagheera/Baloo, which I think are similar pairings! And no, I don't seek them out because they're everywhere in media. But they also tend to feature quite a lot in love triangles where the "friend" love interest is the losing side of that triangle, so watching things with love triangles is usually a disappointing experience for me.

My favorite character in most movies and TV shows is usually the smartest or the craziest character.

Good guy characters where the narrative shows them to be good people, or even abrasive people that still have a solid moral core underneath. They're loyal to their friends and come through for them when it matters.

The first one for me was Wonder Woman, back when I was about five. Also, Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock, when I was about the same age.
