Whichever one makes you feel like you need to insert pedantry into conversations. Go with that.

I actually think there’s a place for specificity, especially with language about mental health.

Having the right words can be very helpful and those words stop being so helpful when they get watered down and applied to other things willy-nilly.

I’m not out there policing other people’s language, but I think there’s something to be said for using terms accurately.

It was a genuine question. The first answer was an impulse. The second is an intrusive thought. I can understand why you thought it was a snarky question but for many of us who struggle with intrusive thoughts, it can be tricky decoding online discussions when your lived experience has been turned into a meme. Either way is cool, I was just curious what direction OP wanted to steer the discussion.

DA but I had the same question. Idk why ither anon got snarky about it. Maybe they were feeling defensive or something.

+1

I have legit intrusive thoughts and they're not the quirky 'oh my god I just want to smear peanut butter on the counter' type that I see get cutesified online. I have to actively battle against self-harming impulses and I don't really appreciate people watering down the terminology because they're so quirky lol.

DA - I'm with all y'all. I have intrusive thoughts and I actually skipped this entire thread because my intrusive thoughts are actually very easily influenced and once one comes into my brain I have no control over it. It's awful.

Yeah, mine are fucked up! Not self-harm, but bad, and I would never act on them.

I call bullshit on this response, especially how your life has allegedly been turned into a meme.

Lived experience and life aren’t the same. And yes, calling impulses “intrusive thoughts” is absolutely a meme for at least a few years now.

Go prove it.

They have a specific meaning for a reason because it's important to correctly label certain types of mental illness symptoms to better treat it, instead of watering it down to 'lol I ate a tube of ice cream in one go, intrusive thought lel!'.
