Do they know you wasted this much money on it, Or that you're still paying to keep it? If yes, yeah, they are asshats.

I can understand someone being embarrassed to mention it, especially if it hurts that much, but they have to know. Either they'll be shamed enough or they'll show they truly don't care, and then the bridge can be burned.

I'm guessing tabletop minis and scenery, OP? See if you can repaint them and sell them off bit by bit (don't spend more money on paint, use what you have) or just offer them up as-is. Lots of people are happy to be able to grab secondhand minis and terrain so if you can offload it, even at a loss, you're not storing it and making back some of your cash.
