I'm not an anime/manga person, but... yeah, a lot of the early art (and some of the current stuff) is so ugly to me that I don't see myself getting past that and enjoying it.

I do not agree, but I admit I have firm nostalgic googles on and miss some of the style of that period. But fair enough, to each their own. Art is subjective and all.

I think some of the art from that era was good, but a whole lot more of it was bad, and the bad stuff was REAL bad. The average level definitely went up over time as the industry matured and got more mainstream. You rarely see the truly shit art being published at all these days because publishers are spoiled for choice.

Oh, no, I agree a lot of them have badly aged in terms of quality. I guess I mean more like, I like the general vibe of 90s anime character designs and aesthetic, is what I'm getting at.

Cowboy Bebop's art style is rather realistic tho

Yeah, love Cowboy Bebop's art. Guess it is the exception to the rule.

Ahahahahahahaha ahahahahahahahaahahaha, ahahahaha, no.

A lot of ... lower bar art in that style comes across as some one trying to market coprolites as a gemstone.

I think a lot of the recs come from people with their nostalgia goggles stuck to their faces a bit too tightly and who haven't watched the older shows they rec in years themselves. I can totally relate to that though, because there are several shows I had the fondest memories of and which I thought had amazing animation and then I watched a bit of them in recent years and... damn, they were BADLY drawn and animated worse.

Weirdly, I'm having the opposite problem with getting into new anime. I don't know why, but I have an easier time getting into older anime than really new 'too-polished' anime.

same. there's less variety in art styles overall, probably because they're no longer relying on manga to provide the basis of the story. light novels have no art associated with them so the style of anime based on light novels can be whatever the studio decides.

Same here.

Same; I tend to watch newer anime, but all the "new" stuff I've seen has been things with distinctive art styles, and I've started gravitating toward older anime because of its imperfections.

This. I used to love how the anime styles mirrored the manga art. It really felt like the artist's work had come alive. Now there's some nods to the manga art but most shows are very much from the same cookie cutter these days when it comes to graphics and it's boring.

(Anonymous) 2025-07-28 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Same. I LIKED the wider diversity of art styles from those days. These days a lot of stuff is just really samey, and I find that boring.

I can't stand big eye little mouth. I have a massive uncanny valley reaction towards it. The characters look like a combination between babies and insects.

For some reason it only works for me in Sailor Moon. Otherwise, I'm with you.

Right, and Sailor Moon's eyes aren't even that big compared to some of the stuff from that era! Kodomo no Omocha and Magic Knight Rayearth are two that really set off my fight or flight response. I think the art style overall is pretty, and over time I got used to it enough where I could ignore it, but the eyes being like 50% of the face is just not a style I vibe with.

(Anonymous) 2025-07-28 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
I disagree. The bad shows were really bad, that's true, but the good shows all had really distinct styles. I saw a tweet the other day pointing out how so many angular styles from the 90s-2000s have now become softer and rounded, like being wrapped in a baby blanket, and I don't care for it. I miss when shows could be distinct looking over the same soft-focus baby look (and in fairness, we do still get some fun looking shows! Hanako-kun is airing right now and it had such a unique style. But we also get like 10+ boring blah power fantasy slop shows that all look photocopied from each other).

Also I find something charming about older series. I've been going through some classics for the first time lately, stuff from the 70s like the OG Gundam, and every time I see a shadow that's clearly just a streak of charcoal it makes me smile. Someone carefully hand colored that cell, and I miss that kind of personal touch.

Damn, you have all my favorite anime is this image. XD

(Anonymous) 2025-07-28 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
Damn I love these art styles! Even the worse series have charm to me. 90s and 80s anime are my favorites.
