Re: Character types you hate

Characters whose purpose is to die, and the writers want you to care about their death so they try extremely hard to make them lovable. There are two main ways they seem to do this: 1. The character is a complete all-around good person with a positive attitude and innocent love of helping others. 2. The character is a total badass who also has a positive attitude but in a more aggressive manner than 1 and is super confident and makes rousing speeches to motivate other characters.

I don't hate the attempt at this kind of character, I appreciate it more than not even trying to give characterization to a character because they're just going to die soon. They just don't work for me because they rarely have any real flaws. (In fact, even if they don't die, extremely badass characters don't work for me even with flaws unless they also have a dorky/loser side.) I hate them because they always have a loud group of fans who keep asking why they had to die and being mad that they did, and don't understand that their death was the entire point. They are lovable (to you) plot devices.

A few examples I can give that are probably too well-known to be spoilers are Hughes from Fullmetal Alchemist and Kamina from Gurren Lagann. Shonen anime LOVES this trope.

Yep, agreed. I watched a certain anime once upon a time, and one of the group of teenaged main characters was this sickly (as in, couldn’t get out of bed most days because of her long term illness) girl that everyone adored who was this angelically sweet wisp of a thing. Who also had a blatant crush on the main protagonist. The writers couldn’t have planted more death flags around her if they had TRIED. So needless to say, she got taken out in a blaze of glory self-sacrifice within a handful of episodes. Multiple episodes called back to her death and its impact on the other kids, not a bad thing honestly, but I found it hard to care anywhere near how much the writers really clearly wanted me to because of how obviously it was signposted, how one-note a character she’d been, and how heavily it was leaned on later in the series.

Stranger Things does that every season.
