tbh my criteria for this would be 'if they can actually have a discussion about the book' then I'd consider it fine. Not how I read but if they can absorb the story and talk about it, cool, I'm a little jealous. If they can't talk about it or remember anything about it, say, a week later, I'd consider it not really reading.

Yeah, this. It's like how some people can watch a movie or a TV show in the background while doing something else and still absorb everything.
