We don't do it enthusiastically. It is done with less passion than singing your ABCs.

You’ve got to imagine them doing it with a dead-eyed total lack of enthusiasm, barely mumbling through the words. (In my day, there were several of us who didn’t say it or just skipped the god bit, but not standing would get you a good scolding we thought usually wasn’t worth it.)

Depending on your country, maybe you’re familiar with people (especially children) doing the same for parts of a religious service?

They probably don't. Or at least no one did when I was in school.

I'm American, I was in middle and high school (so ages 10-17) in the mid-2000s. The schools I went to played the pledge over the intercom every morning, but no one else said it. Generally the teacher would be writing on the board and the kids would be talking/reading/finishing last night's homework or whatever. If a teacher really cared, the most they could do was make everyone be quiet while it played. They legally could not force anyone to say it, and most teachers just ignored it.

"Write it yourself" is not always helpful, but in fandom, you do sometimes have to build it yourself. Talk about the thing you like. Comment on the few fics/art that do have the thing you like. Go in exchanges and request it. If you're not a fic writer, make gifsets or write meta about it. Sitting around whining about how there isn't anything won't get you anywhere.

mostly because whether it's required varies from state to state (and even then, how strictly it is enforced often varies by state, district to district, or even school)

but for non-USA people, yeah, some states do have a law that children are required to recite it every morning

By "content creators" do you mean people trying to make money off it, or other fans? Because "content creators" are always going to move with the algorithm, but if you mean other fans, stop gatekeeping. If new people are coming to your fandom that's a good thing! Be kind to them! Welcome them enthusiastically! Encourage their contributions! Otherwise you'll end up with 3 bitter old fans sitting in a circle complaining about how nobody cares about their fandom anymore.

I have a similar frustration with that kind of dismissive comment. Especially because it often reads to me as implying that it’s easy and the person is just being lazy.

I’d probably have a little more grace for it if there was a an acknowledgment that starting to do creative writing can be damn difficult and what you might produce probably won’t come anywhere near the quality of what you’re hoping for or imagining.

I'm not American, but I imagine it's done with about as much enthusiasm as when we have to sing the national anthem or a hymn at school assembly.

If you've ever been in a situation where a group of people who don't actually care have to recite the Lord's Prayer? Yeah, it's like that.

It's totally not the same as reading fic by others, but I want to encourage you to explore writing fic more if you're at all interested in trying! Short stuff, just for you, and if you don't enjoy it no need to force yourself. Some people have a gift for writing stories naturally but most of us have to learn.

I do agree that it's dismissive to say "just write your own fic" because not everyone writes as you said and even though I write, I will get very bored if my own fic is all I have to read...

Hey, good on you for enjoying them, nonny!

I certainly enjoyed the hell out of Brosnan in the Bond-adjacent Thomas Crown Affair. He can be very charming and a little cheesiness can be lots of fun.
