"Write it yourself" is not always helpful, but in fandom, you do sometimes have to build it yourself. Talk about the thing you like. Comment on the few fics/art that do have the thing you like. Go in exchanges and request it. If you're not a fic writer, make gifsets or write meta about it. Sitting around whining about how there isn't anything won't get you anywhere.

I have a similar frustration with that kind of dismissive comment. Especially because it often reads to me as implying that it’s easy and the person is just being lazy.

I’d probably have a little more grace for it if there was a an acknowledgment that starting to do creative writing can be damn difficult and what you might produce probably won’t come anywhere near the quality of what you’re hoping for or imagining.

It's totally not the same as reading fic by others, but I want to encourage you to explore writing fic more if you're at all interested in trying! Short stuff, just for you, and if you don't enjoy it no need to force yourself. Some people have a gift for writing stories naturally but most of us have to learn.

I do agree that it's dismissive to say "just write your own fic" because not everyone writes as you said and even though I write, I will get very bored if my own fic is all I have to read...

It’s not easy to create for yourself no, I enjoy writing but I certainly didn’t start out super great or anything and I still consider myself very average, but I’m happy with that.

But this type of response nearly always comes from others trying to force fans into writing what they want, and sorry, but that’s not going to happen so yeah people are going to tell you to write it yourself because that is the realistic answer there. You can’t force others to make ship fic for you.

To me it entirely depends on the tone of the original comment. It's typical for every fan to want more fic or art of their faves, that's just normal.

But every so often (more often that I'd like) you get that entitled asshole who acts like all the fanartists and fanwriters in the fandom are somehow blind and missing out on the great opportunity to draw their fave or their ship and whyyyyy aren't more people doing it???

I think it's perfectly reasonable to ask those people why they don't write/draw or heck, commission writers/artists themselves... of course they always have a laundry list of reasons that they can't which they never thought might also apply to everyone else, though.

We're too busy writing what we want to write what you want. Time is precious, energy is precious.

Twenty years ago, I started writing what I wanted to read, because no-one else was producing it. Half a million words later, I'm a decent-ish writer.

Bum in chair, fingers on keyboard. That's the way everyone gets started. If you don't want to do that, if you just want to read, fair enough! but you don't get to complain about what writers write.

Honestly, yeah. And sometimes (most of the time, I'd say) when people vent about "I wish there was more X", it's not demanding other people to do it. It's wishing there were more people who liked it and a circle surrounding it instead of posting in a void.

I do agree with the sentiment of "making your own food" and commenting on other people's work, talking about X if you can't write/draw, etc., but people can get so rude and read the worst intent in a simple statement.

Yeah, it's a jerk move, even if the people giving out this shining pearl of wisdom refuse to admit it. Even if you're a reasonably good writer, it's disingenuous at best (and honestly, kind of delusional) to act like writing the fic you're interested in is the same as finding an already written fic that hits all the right notes for you, where you don't know any of the plot twists, etc.

You know how you get that ability? You write it yourself. You write bad stories yourself, over and over and over again until you get good at it.

So, my advice to you:

I'm perfectly capable of writing the fic myself. I have MANY small fandoms/rarepairs where I do just that. I still hate when people say 'write it yourself'! Saying I wish there was more X isn't just the expression of a desire for a specific fic, it's also shorthand for wanting a community! If I'm the only person writing about X, who do I bounce my ideas off of? Is anyone reading what I write? Are people sharing headcanons, playlists, art, screenshots and meta?

I want all THOSE things-- when I say I wish someone was writing about X, it's because I want to be able to talk to that person about something we both care about. I want to learn their favorite things to work into my own fic, or exchange fics, or collaborate.

By "content creators" do you mean people trying to make money off it, or other fans? Because "content creators" are always going to move with the algorithm, but if you mean other fans, stop gatekeeping. If new people are coming to your fandom that's a good thing! Be kind to them! Welcome them enthusiastically! Encourage their contributions! Otherwise you'll end up with 3 bitter old fans sitting in a circle complaining about how nobody cares about their fandom anymore.

Kids or no kids?

I've never had much interest in kids and babies, and never really wanted to have them myself.

But seeing the US right wing trying to push everyone to have more kids (and turn women into sex-and-breeding appliances) just makes me even more adamant that I don't want them. I already feel like the only people who should be having kids are people who really want kids (both halves of a couple, if the people are in a couple), and are mentally, emotionally, and financially ready to. Now I really hope that people who don't 100% genuinely want kids just refuse to have them and the Republicans' pro-natalist stuff just backfires horribly on them.
