Eh, I chalk this down to ease of drawing and not anything more than that.

One template for many characters = easier to churn out content especially if you have multiple artists working on something. Like yes one extremely generic conventional attractive template will be chosen, but I doubt it's 'trying' to make a statement about unattractive people not existing, any more than anime sameface is 'trying' to say everyone in that world are aliens that for real don't have noses or sprite rpgs are 'trying' to say everyone in their worlds' heads are as big as the rest of their bodies

SA

Caveat: if every female character has the same body type but the male ones are drawn with wide variety of shapes and sizes, yes, that's saying something even if it's as basic as 'artist doesn't care about female chars as much' but that's usually not the case and all the male characters are also generic bishounen body types in these kinds of series

I’m gonna make my own secret about this, but you do get fat people in this kind of series. They’re portrayed as hideous, but think they’re attractive, and keep failing to seduce their preferred sex, often while acting like complete assholes. The one in Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls In a Dungeon? is even a serial rapist. It all pisses me off.

That's how the Japanese view fat people - being fat is a shameful thing that reveals poor character.

Your not alone.OP. I too get uncanny valley vibes from it

I had a hard time with a few K-dramas and C-dramas that my friends were very into, where everyone (at least everyone under 45) looks so airbrushed all the time.

It makes me similarly uncomfortable, but beyond that it’s very hard for me to take them seriously as 3-dimensional characters.

I have this issue with many US shows too, especially teen dramas.

With anime, character designs being samey are the norm for many different reasons depending on the show. Sometimes it's a fanservice/attractiveness thing, but usually it's just laziness and using the same default template. When things were still cel drawn, it actually made even more sense.

Live action doesn't have any of those excuses. Most real people aren't naturally conventionally attractive in a sameish way, so on all those shows like that, it's that way because the actors were hand-picked for their looks and others were weeded out for not meeting the standard.

So idk, I think it's weird that you think anime is the worse offender here.

Take into consideration that vague, cartoony art styles can obscure features that would make people look otherwise unique (and possibly ugly), but I can't fault you even though I personally don't mind. At least, I don't mind the sameface, but for some reason when I think about it a little I resent that in many shows everyone will have one of two bodies ("male" and "female") with only different heights and cup sizes.
