I agree so much. It's one of the reasons why I miss forums. The internet today seems more geared towards disposable and short-form content. Read a meme, scroll past. Watch a short video, scroll past. It's so much harder to find places where there are meaningful discussions with depth, rather than bots, rage baiting, trolling, etc. Forums definitely had their flaws, but I miss them so much. Like you said, it tends to be people sharing their thoughts or photos or memes and that's the end of it. No one wants to talk about things anymore.

I've found some subreddits have a similar vibe (you really have to look for the good ones), but that's still not the same as entire forums centered around one subject. They also tend to have fairweather mods who abandon the sub. Not saying this didn't happen on forums, but the mods/admins were generally more involved.

That's true, there are some decent subreddits, usually the smaller ones. (It seems that typically when they get to be too large, you get a high enough percentage of assholes that the culture shifts in a bad way.) It's sad that Reddit is the closest thing we have to the old fashioned forums, but hey. You take what you can get, I guess. One of the things I really miss about forums is how discussions could continue over long periods of time. Especially when it comes to media. Someone watching a show for the first time or reading a book for the first time might want to discuss it. If you have a forum, you can find an old thread and read through and comment, and people who are also interested in that book or episode might read your comment and reply. But on the internet today, you have to make a new post, which will get a little bit of attention but always blows over in a few days.

I know! Threads might even have a Part I, II etc. I really miss that.

I've replied to older comments before; usually they won't respond, or they'll be dismissive because they've long since moved on.

And if it's something people have already discussed 400 times, they hear how everyone's already talked about it 400 times. Which is a valid complaint, but not the OP's fault if they're new.

It's their fault if they don't use the goddamn search before they post.

Someday I will properly internalize that other people use Reddit and other platforms very differently than I do.

I am still repeatedly baffled and embarrassing surprised at people who show up to a post with a discussion prompt and respond with the absolute minimum answer, which has already been commented multiple times.

I definitely understand commenting your answer with some elaboration to invite replies/discussion. I understand getting in fast with a popular answer to get upvotes. I even understand venting some sentiment into the void, knowing no one may read or answer. But just commenting “The Godfather” like a dozen previous people is so fundamentally alien to me.

I don't get that either. What about The Godfather? Talk!

Quite a while ago, someone on LJ told me that started giving the bare minimum because there was so much drama online when they tried having full conversations. Maybe that's the case for other people as well.

Thanks, that’s something I hadn’t considered.

Not sure which platform you're talking about, but it feels like people are too nervous to interact with each other now, especially with the whole "DNI if..." thing. I've mostly shitposted in the past because any space for serious discussion isn't available, and sometimes I'd feel weird for responding to a rando's post even though I didn't mind when people sent me anons saying they agreed with my takes.
