1. At this point, I don't trust anybody to show up and participate in any fandom event unless they've got literal money invested into it somehow.
2. I don't even care if they promised they'd show up and participate and end up not doing it. IRL happens. Circumstances change.
3. I do care if they couldn't spend the literal five minutes it'd take to shoot an email to let everyone else know they're unable to participate instead of disappearing. That's what really shows everyone how much they value others' time, which is 'not at all.'

This bothers me as well. Or WORSE, emailing saying "I swear it's almost ready" a billion times before finally just ghosting.
