Oooh, another secret that just makes me curious about why.

If you have any guesses, OP, I’d love to hear them. I wonder if it’s a matter of the worldbuilding or a lingering emotional connection to characters that makes those long fics different for you.

NAYRT, but it took me a long time to find fandoms I liked reading for as well. I don't think there's one answer.

One thing I will say is that in my experience, there tended to be more AUs that were still grounded in the canon ("what if Harry and Draco became friends in the first book?" "what if Sirius never went to Azkaban?") versus fandoms where most of the AUs that had little to do with the original canon. No shade, just wasn't my thing, personally. There was also a lot more backstory/missing moments fic than there was in the fandoms I tried after. The fandom I finally got into was much closer to what I experienced in the HP fandom.

(Ofc, I was never really into Ao3 until I started shopping for new fandoms. Maybe Harry Potter fic is/was different there.)

SA - Not saying that was the only reason. I think it was that and a lot of other things.

Thanks, that’s an interesting observation about HP fanfic, which I’m pretty ignorant on. Personally, I do often wish my fandoms had more “what if” stories compared to more radical AUs that have little to do with canon settings.

Some fandoms just don't click.

Oh, for sure. And I’m always curious why they don’t click for me, but I know it can be hard to impossible to tell why.

I just thought it might be easier for OP to figure out what made this one work positively for them, when all others haven’t.

I realize that’s also maybe coloured by my assumptions and experience reading across so many smaller fandoms.

Not OP, and there are a couple others I read longfic for, but not many. It is the combination of worldbuilding that really draws me in but also leaves a lot of room to explore, worlds that are large enough for room to explore, characters that I'm intrigued by or relate to and lam willing to follow on a long journey, and room for stories that work for me long-term.
