(Anonymous) 2025-08-15 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)One thing I will say is that in my experience, there tended to be more AUs that were still grounded in the canon ("what if Harry and Draco became friends in the first book?" "what if Sirius never went to Azkaban?") versus fandoms where most of the AUs that had little to do with the original canon. No shade, just wasn't my thing, personally. There was also a lot more backstory/missing moments fic than there was in the fandoms I tried after. The fandom I finally got into was much closer to what I experienced in the HP fandom.
(Ofc, I was never really into Ao3 until I started shopping for new fandoms. Maybe Harry Potter fic is/was different there.)

Thanks, that’s an interesting observation about HP fanfic, which I’m pretty ignorant on. Personally, I do often wish my fandoms had more “what if” stories compared to more radical AUs that have little to do with canon settings.
