It’s because Lego finally realized that adults were their biggest market share by far. Unfortunately they didn’t notice that until the pandemic and prices started jumping. The post Covid AFOL spaces are very different. There is very little creativity and instead it’s just people bragging about how much money they spent and how many unopened boxes they have. Sometimes they brag about being able to follow simple instructions.

They’ll never do Freddy Krueger but a clone brand got the rights for Freddy, Jason, and Michael Myers.

I just want them to bring back non-licensed stuff. I remember there being all sorts of cool 'robin hood' type sets and random castles when I was a kid, but now it all seems to be movie or tv show based stuff. :(

They had a forestmen set a couple years ago and they several Castle theme sets as well as some Vikings. There is also the Friends line and loads of space stuff, too. And don’t forget Technic. Plus the botanicals and the Art series. There is also the 3 in 1 line and the Icons line (formerly Creator Expert). And the Idea stuff is a mix; it depends on what people vote for and what they can realistically produce. And don’t forget the architecture sets! And the classic line is just pieces, perfect for building whatever you dream up.

I guess I should look online. None of that stuff is in the stores here. Except for the adult art type sets and botanicals but I'm not into those. I would love some solid Vikings stuff though. I'm off to peruse the website!

Big box stores push the licensed sets and it sucks. My local ones even did away with Ninjago which is a LEGO original. They have a few City sets sometimes but only maybe one shelf surrounded by various Disney sets like Mickey, Frozen, Star Wars, and MCU :(

I still have the two castles and the robin hood treehouse hideout from the 80s! once in a while I take them out and re-assemble them to figure out which pieces are missing, forget to make a note of said missing pieces, and forget to get them replaced.

I am very jealous! We had such fun sets from the 80s and early 90s. For some reason one of my brothers ended up with ALL of our legos from childhood and then sold them when he moved overseas because it would be too expensive to take them with him. I was pissed when I found out. There were five of us siblings and we were all into Legos but whenever we'd get a set or blocks we'd pool them into a communal bin and play together, so I have no idea why it was decided they were all his in the end.

If you’re interested in Lego, check out Lumibricks. They used to be called Fun Whole (yes, really!) and still have some builds out under that name I believe. They make some amazing sets!

Those are so cute! I love their Middle Ages sets. And so many cute cabins and houses! I had heard that the "off brand Legos" had really raised in quality but hadn't checked any out yet.

Not all the off brands are good quality but Lumibricks/Fun Whole is actually better quality than Lego. I have most of the Middle Ages sets but only built about half of them because I ran out of display room. They look better than the Lego medieval blacksmith from a few years ago and fit wonderfully with the older Lego castle sets.

I really want a few of their steampunk sets but I just don’t have the room for them. (Or the time or money because they’re not overpriced like Lego but they’re still expensive.)

I have to admit, they got me good with Lego Barad-dûr and it was a very fun build. But I have no interest any time soon in spending that much time and money on another licensed Lego set.

Capitalism.

It's capitalism.
