As an author I'm perfectly happy with even quite generic-sounding comments, because I know I myself often don't have the brain to say anything more specific. However, I take your point about being worried about sounding like a bot; I was very annoyed to receive some spammy comments on Fanfiction.net earlier this year of the "Great imagery, DM me if you want a commission" type of thing which are scams trying to get at your personal/payment information. (You can tell these ones because they don't actually quite make sense with regard to the fics they're left on.) As long as you don't sound like you're trying to get anything out of the author I think you'll avoid that, though. I don't think there's bots going around that leave just the praise and nothing else (like the request for a DM or trying to get you to click a link or something).
