And I try to distract myself but anytime I don't think about it for a second, as soon as I think of it again it comes with a massive wave of guilt and self loathing that I actually managed to forget about it shortly while my friend does not have that luxury.

As someone who has been through something similar, it's very likely that your friend is having exactly the same emotions. Like, when it was happening, I accidentally splashed water on myself while I was washing my hands, had to deal with that, and then realised I'd forgotten what was going on for a few minutes and felt horribly guilty.

Look after yourself and listening to your friend is support - so many "friends" just vanish when something like this happens.

Thank you. Yeah, it's a really weird feeling - especially since for me, life does go on fairly normally, which makes the whiplash feeling every time even worse. But yeah, can'r help her if I lose it as well. I think I just need to get over the shock first because it was truly unexpected.
