Seems pretty obvious, really.

It's an anti-war war series, where the main character in an ensemble cast is a bit of a jackass. He's not a villain protagonist, but he's not perfect either.

'Flawed' seems pretty apt.

A flawless character does not exist. It's all up to interpretation. I think Hawk is always right in the series. OP thinks that their take is the only valid one so it's a no brainer - OP's annoyed at Hawk's ego because their own ego is huge so that's what they notice in others.

He does have an ego. It is a little annoying. It's common in main characters. Just because OP finds that specific thing annoying doesn't mean it's their toxic trait.

Hawk's pretty humble for a surgeon, compared to real life surgeons I've met.
