That's your ego speaking, OP. You're just a fan with fanon. That's it.

Not sure I understand what you’re referring to as fanon here.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-25 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Seems pretty obvious, really.

It's an anti-war war series, where the main character in an ensemble cast is a bit of a jackass. He's not a villain protagonist, but he's not perfect either.

'Flawed' seems pretty apt.

A flawless character does not exist. It's all up to interpretation. I think Hawk is always right in the series. OP thinks that their take is the only valid one so it's a no brainer - OP's annoyed at Hawk's ego because their own ego is huge so that's what they notice in others.

You need to go back to armchair psychoanalysis school.

He does have an ego. It is a little annoying. It's common in main characters. Just because OP finds that specific thing annoying doesn't mean it's their toxic trait.

'The thing somebody hates about somebody else is what's wrong with them' is such a fucking dumb take.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-26 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
A big ego is toxic in your opinion? Do you want to talk about it? Without ego we have no ambition, so it's also a positive trait.
Hawk's pretty humble for a surgeon, compared to real life surgeons I've met.

You misread that comment if your conclusion was they were calling Hawkeye’s ego a toxic trait.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-26 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
You again, fuck off.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-26 03:51 pm (UTC)(link)
are you talking to yourself

(Anonymous) 2025-08-25 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never ever came across the both takes you describe.

I’ve never seen this. I guess I haven’t hung out in MASH-specific fandom spaces much, but I have discussed the show with plenty of people over the years and read people’s thoughts.

The range I’ve seen is from “Hawkeye is a harmless joker” to “Hawkeye is a pain in the ass to people around him and a jerk to women”. I’m happy to land somewhere in the middle on those: “well-meaning but flawed” seems pretty apt.

I have never met anyone who enjoys the show and is seriously pro-military. I’d actually be interested in hearing what that’s like.

I shudder to even have to type this but lbr the pro-military types probably consider Frank the best character and think he was right about everything.

I don't actually like MASH, ever since I was a kid and those opening trumpets and helicopter noises were the signal at 10:30 to change the channel, but my housemate has been watching it so I can definitely say "well-meaning but flawed" is the only right way to take Hawkeye. I'm with you there.

I actually saw someone on reddit describing Frank Burns as someone who has flaws, but takes his job seriously. I couldn’t quite fathom that. I guess if you consider his job to be maintaining the most trivial aspects of military regulations? (And only as far as other people are concerned, given his frequent hypocrisy.)

I thought the show did a decent job of making old Ferret Face just sympathetic enough to make the audience feel sorry for him once in a while without actually making him someone you wanted to root for or redeeming him in any meaningful way.

My Silent Generation grandfather was the standard amount of pro-military for a working class man born in the 30s and MASH was one of his favorite shows before Fox News ate his brain when he was in his early 80s. He thought the jokes were funny and liked watching Frank Burns get his comeuppance because he was a jerk. He didn't think the sets looked much like how he remembered Korea. He liked Trapper better than BJ.

Thanks, that makes a lot of sense.

After that first comment, I did start to think about how “pro-military” actually means different things to different people. There’s probably a sizeable population who consider the military to be overall noble, have a lot of respect for service members, but would also happily join in with the type of jokes on MASH that are often aimed at obstructive bureaucracy, egotistical generals, and war profiteering.

Hrmmmmmmm. I don't think I've ever talked with anyone who fit either of these extremes. My dad liked MASH quite a lot (he was a WWII & Korean war vet), and we always watched it. He thought the military stuff was a little silly (unrealistic), but he would talk about the surgical/medical stuff and answer questions.

I like Hawkeye to an extent, but you can see how Alda's ego kind of went on a bit of a rampage sometimes. But overall, the character did have some growth and some change. Margaret and Father Mulcahy and Klinger were always my favorites.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-26 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, my biggest beef with Alda/Hawkeye was how bad he was at crying.

Heeee!
I'm struggling to remember crying scenes...maybe because they're so bad.... :D

Is that the guy who wears the dress, or?

(Anonymous) 2025-08-26 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
yes.

No, that's Hawkeye. Klinger spends most of the show wearing dresses.
