"so I end up shrugging and not getting into the fandom at all" is pretty much how I've ended up approaching most fandoms in the past 10 years or so. I go to look into it and chat with fans and each fandom has been such a dramatic mess that I just don't even want to bother figuring out how or where to jump in. It makes me sad, but I guess that's just where I'm at these days.
