"so I end up shrugging and not getting into the fandom at all" is pretty much how I've ended up approaching most fandoms in the past 10 years or so. I go to look into it and chat with fans and each fandom has been such a dramatic mess that I just don't even want to bother figuring out how or where to jump in. It makes me sad, but I guess that's just where I'm at these days.

Your problem here is that you're assuming everyone who watches a thing is watching it for the same reasons. One person might love a spinoff because it focuses on a character who didn't get much airtime in the main series, but that may be the exact reason someone else hates it.

If you're interested in something, just watch it for yourself and see which parts YOU personally enjoy and vibe with.

If it's a fandom for something you can watch and you don't care about spoilers, go to YouTube. Type in the name of the fandom. Scroll down, click on any video that seems interesting, sample any shows/movies/animes/whatevers in that fandom until you either know that you want to know more about that particular one or that don't want to know more, then you have your list. If nothing seems that interesting to you in what comes up in the search, try adding 'best moments' or 'funniest scenes' or 'saddest parts' or whatever floats your boat. If you still can't find anything that interests you, that fandom is probably not for you and move on to another one. Rinse and repeat.

Heck yeah, I love this secret. I remember playing Age of Empires 2 which had a strategy campaign where you were El Cid, and basically employing Klingon-esque tactics was the only way to win.

...Now I want an episode of Star Trek where El Cid is namedropped alongside other venerated warriors.

Jor El didn't land with "audiences" because the loud fans are ones who think their version is the only version. This version is following a different comic version from what these fans are used to, so they insist it is wrong.

OG fan here, used to have watch parties in the late 90s. Spent the past decade rolling my eyes over younger people thinking their libertarianism was scandalous.

I haven't seen the new season, but that would indeed suck if it was just news commentary because SP's whole appeal has always been rooted in absurdism, like what starts as commentary devolves into random mountain monsters and toilet humor and Cartman is inevitably the worst human imaginable in any possible scenario.
