I would honestly say the opposite - it's a good thing that Gunn isn't changing his presentation of the character to cater to the audience demands. I also disliked his Jor-El but I'd rather a creator stuck with their idea than changed it to suit the loudest fans, because that always works out terribly.

OP never said anything about changing the character, just that they didn't understand why. Very different things.
