Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are engaged. I didn't predict that being announced at this point!

DA. I'm so excited! The news came out during my lunch hour and I'm thrilled for them! They both look so radiant in the photos!

(And watching the Gaylors have meltdowns gives me life.)

Of course they were gonna time it to coincide with a new album. It’s free publicity that reach former/casual fans and drive up variant sales. I don’t think there’s been any doubt for a long while that they’d get married. Good for them!

beginning 1 September, DW will need to geoblock Mississippi IPs

Did anyone else see this? This is wild. The whole "upload your ID" to a website is insane to me, and I can't believe it's taken off as much as it has.

I can’t believe the ID thing didn’t take off earlier tbh. I’ve been using ID Me for at least a decade.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-27 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, large scale ID theft and hacks have got worse recently, not better! And so many large companies use smaller companies to manage various parts of their IT infrastructure, which makes them vastly more vulnerable to hacks, and I am sure as fuck not uploading my official ID of any kind to access a website.

That is beyond disgusting. I can't even wrap my head around any sort of reasoning as for why they think people should do this.

Is a two week notice the thing of the past?

(Anonymous) 2025-08-26 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
My company has been through a lot in the past few years. Tariffs, supply issues, reduced demand for our product, the CEO dying and his son taking over. Last week, the SFO said he would be retiring in February of next year (after working here for 20 years). Today, the CEO came to town and walked him out of the building.

This isn't the first person I've seen this happen to (in my company and others). All I know is, if I ever quit, I'm going to just give me notice on my last day.

Re: Is a two week notice the thing of the past?

(Anonymous) 2025-08-26 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
If you don't need them as a reference you can do whatever you want! Two weeks is still the "polite" thing to do, but honestly a lot depends on the industry and specific place and situation.

Re: Is a two week notice the thing of the past?

(Anonymous) 2025-08-26 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
In my industry the standard is a one month notice. I think it depends on where you are and if you want to burn bridges or not.

Re: Is a two week notice the thing of the past?

(Anonymous) 2025-08-26 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Where I work one month is the standard but that's only really if you ever want to work for that company again, I could in theory leave whenever I wanted to and the only issue I'd have is that I obviously wouldn't get paid for the weeks after I left.

Re: Is a two week notice the thing of the past?

(Anonymous) 2025-08-27 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
That sucks! But it’s becoming more common unfortunately. In my circle, most have stopped giving notice since we live in a right to work state, which means they can fire you for giving notice.

Depends where you live and what the laws are. Sometimes it's a security issue - in my country two weeks is standard for most full-time jobs, but in some industries as soon as you give notice you have to leave the building and surrender your logins, even if you're paid for the following two weeks (and need to be available to the company for that time). I work in rural healthcare, though, and some people here give up to a year's notice to make sure there's time to find a replacement, and even then a year isn't always enough.

As others have said, highly variable depending on the industry and company.

However, in most places I've worked, if that happened to someone who had been with the company for 20 years I would assume that there was some sort of underlying drama.

Read your contract. If you don't have a contract, or the contract doesn't specify, then notice is considered a courtesy and as long as you are paid what is owed to you (both salary and any accumulated time off) and aren't dismissed under certain defined circumstances (discrimination, retaliation, etc.), you probably aren't going to win a wrongful dismissal suit. But also, there are often grounds for immediate dismissal written into either the contracts or the company rules, which employees are generally contracted to abide by. And in cases where they are looking to get rid of someone, sometimes there's compensation offered (and/or blackmail threatened) if that person leaves without a fuss.

If my employer can dismiss me without notice, I can quit without notice too.

If you’re in a right to work state, it’s most likely he was fired for giving notice because it saves the company money. This is especially true for employees with seniority because the cost to the company for unemployment is a lot lower than their salary. The employee has no recourse because non-union employees in RTW states only have a few federal protections. And some companies qualify for federal benefits for downsizing their workforce, which is one reason so many posted jobs go unfilled despite record applications.

Venting/gripe thread

(Anonymous) 2025-08-27 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
I'm currently waiting on a hysteroscopy and have been here near three hours. I hate waiting around. They've given me temazipan to relax me which is good, as I haven't had a good relationship with hospital this year since my father died two months ago.
