ummmm OP I really really love you. <3 I didn't deal with the same shit you did (in fact I kind of wanted to be a boy) but I'll agree that fandom tends to lash out at "girly-girls" or decide that female characters who act feminine are automatically "weak". And that's not cool. And uh, definitely not feminist.

I hate when LJ decides to randomly post a comment I'm in the middle of typing. I was going to all snarkily comment on the folks who take offense at the idea of "acting like a dude" and get all "What does that MEAN?!" about it. Instead I'll just say those people are annoying.

This! Frankly, I think we should be more about having men act more female. Having lots of women in stereotypically male roles and few men in stereotypically female roles is still sexist, gaiz.

Thanks for this. I also think it's important to expand the definition of masculinity, but too often the concept gets pooh-poohed as some kind of tokenism that we shouldn't have to do. Or retreat, or conciliation. I really hate when feminists say that it's worth nothing for a media production to have one man in a stereotypically female role when there are women in similar roles. How else is it going to progress to the point of having more than one, if we don't start somewhere?

I won't lie, I used to be the kind of girl when I hit puberty that'd bash on the girly-girls, because I identified more with the tomboys. But as I grew older, I realized how stupid that was. Now I appreciate both aspects and anything in between. Hells yeah, go women.

Oh yeah, same here! I used to be really anti-girly when I was younger. Now my fav color's pink and I like cute things, and I play video games and wear mostly guy's clothes. I'm just me no matter how girly or tomboyish it is. XD

... and I loved Disney princesses as a kid. This new film coming out is bringing the love back. :D
