I've honestly yet to figure out why there are so many supposed asexuals on the internet.

Someone said once that there are probably a lot of asexuals in LJ fandom because there are so many people on antidepressants/other medications which decrease sex drive, which actually make sense, because I'm on them and they do that to me. :/ Not saying there are no real asexuals on LJ, but it is kind of weird that there would be so many.

Try that it's more likely for people to be *able* to identify with what they're really feeling on the internet. You don't see people going out and proclaiming their sexuality IRL (...often). They either date guys or they date girls. Or they don't date at all, and people think they're in the closet or are just so pathetically lame that they can't get a date. A whole bunch of that last group are probably asexuals and either don't have a word for it or just don't care to explain to anyone because it's none of their freaking business; any more than it's anyone's business that person A likes members of the same sex and person B likes members of the opposite sex.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if that's part of the reason. Of course, fandom and online communication being what they are, many people do feel more comfortable being open about who they are (sexual orientation) or what they're dealing with (depression, anxiety), but just as fandom seems to have a higher percentage of people being treated for depression than the average western population, so too does fandom seem to have a higher percentage of asexuals.

But idk. In my head (thus the anon), I'm far less believing of people's asexuality than I should be. =/ Since no less than *counts* 3/4ths of the people I know who labeled themselves* as asexual later labeled themselves as sexual.

*trying to be as neutral as possible with the wording.

Perhaps it's because before getting on the Internet people have a tendency to believe the myth that asexuality means "No sex drive, no attraction to people, no desire to be in an emotional relationship, etc" and it takes looking up the subject to realize otherwise.

Look at the comments of this very post. You have people saying that you can't be both straight and asexual, when that is so very very wrong.

Because it's easier to be open about who you are on the internet. Same reason people can be out about being gay on the internet but not in real life, or open about being in fandom, or all sorts of things. And if they come across arseholes who minimise their experiences, mock them, insult them or question them, they can close the window and read something else.

Because, in my experience, "coming out" as an asexual IRL means you'll be judged as being:

- immature
- in denial
- psychologically damaged
- physiologically defective
- probably a survivor of sexual molestation in your past
- a liar

Yeah, I wonder why so few asexuals are upfront about it IRL...
