psssst

that means you're not asexual.

(Anonymous) 2009-10-29 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Here we go again.

[identity profile] seiberwing.livejournal.com 2009-10-29 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Must we?

(Anonymous) 2009-10-30 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
I don't want to add to the wank and so I don't mean this in a negative way ... I really don't get the idea of asexuality and I'm trying to understand. Is 'asexual' like is a positive way of saying 'frigid' ... could that be said to be true? Is the term 'asexuality' a way of representing solidarity among people who might otherwise be called 'frigid' by the outside world? Really no offense meant, I'm trying to use the comparison to understand the concept of asexuality.

[identity profile] a-grumble-cake.livejournal.com 2009-10-29 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
who cares why? just enjoy it.

I like the artwork. What is that from?

[identity profile] seiberwing.livejournal.com 2009-10-29 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I do the same thing, although not specifically with yaoi. It's weird.

I do not think that word means what you think it means.

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2009-10-29 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
"asexual means NOTHING turns you on!!"

I thought it just meant that you have no desire to have sex. From what I hear, asexual people masturbate all the time. Also your use of "STRAIGHT + ASEXUAL" confuses me. I think you have to choose one.

[identity profile] threnody.livejournal.com 2009-10-29 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
That is what it means. You can not desire sex at all in any shape or form, and still feel attraction and have a sex drive (the two just aren't linked). Straight + asexual is not a contradiction.

Re: I do not think that word means what you think it means.

[identity profile] weirdmisty.livejournal.com 2009-10-29 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope, you can be straight and asexual. I am. It just means you're attracted to the opposite sex, but have no interest in sexual activities.

Re: I do not think that word means what you think it means.

[identity profile] phaetonschariot.livejournal.com 2009-10-30 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
The first bit is right, the second isn't. In all technicality, I'm an aromantic asexual with homoerotic aesthetic inclinations - I have no desire for sex, no desire for a romantic relationship, but I think women are gorgeous as hell.

Some asexuals masturbate, some don't, some have nonsexual relationships, some stay single - some even have sexual relationships because they want to make their partner happy.

(Anonymous) 2009-10-29 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
And what's wrong with that? Unless you want to be 100% asexual... which would be stupid bc you can't choose :D

(Anonymous) 2009-10-29 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
You just described EVERY so-called 'asexual' I know. Seriously, asexuals who get off on yaoi or slash seem to be everywhere I look.

[identity profile] bleed-peroxide.livejournal.com 2009-10-29 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
If you're straight, you're heterosexual. I'm a bit confused on how you can heterosexual and asexual at the same time.

Other people have already said useful things about the definition of asexual, which is not as strict as you believe.

But here's my thought: why are you trying to force yourself to conform to a label in any case? Telling yourself "I shouldn't feel this, I'm asexual!" is a recipe for misery. You feel what you feel. I'm not saying that you're not really asexual. You have the right to categorize yourself in the way you think best fits you overall. But if something doesn't fit and has to be adjusted, it should be the category, not your feelings or desires.

Asexual just means you don't want to have sex. Doesn't mean you can't enjoy watching/reading sexual interaction.

On the subject, I'm a straight asexual female who loves slash,

Get thee to AVEN!

[identity profile] greatbriton.livejournal.com 2009-10-30 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I think you're trying a little too hard to label yourself.

(Anonymous) 2009-10-30 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
What gets you off in porn doesn't necessarily get you off in real life; oftentimes it's the distance between fantasy and rl that's part of the attraction. I'm lesbian, and have never met a man whom I've wanted to fuck - men simply aren't attractive to me. But I get off on written slash. If you're asexual (but don't let labels define who you are, and recall that such words have a broad semantic range - you may not be a prototypical asexual, but that doesn't mean you aren't asexual. Penguins don't fly and don't look like a prototypical songbird, but just because they're not what you think of when you think "bird" doesn't mean they're not birds), but yeah, just because you like something in porn doesn't mean you like it in real life. Explore your sexuality further, if you want, but don't let concerns about fitting more perfectly into a category worry you.

[identity profile] twyla-hime.livejournal.com 2009-10-30 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, it's hot. You can be aroused by the idea of it, the aesthetics and the emotion behind it; with no desire to do it irl.

[identity profile] eralkfang.livejournal.com 2009-10-30 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, the fail in this thread.

Little anon, that is not what asexual means. Asexual means a lack of desire to have sex with other people. Getting off on male/male sex doesn't make you any less ace. You're just shoving yourself into a hole. Sexuality is fluid and weird and, to quote Lily Aldrin, "a moving target". If IDing ace is working for you, great! If your attraction to yaoi is honestly bugging with you, explore it further. You don't have to be one thing or another. Labels are just labels.

OP, don't worry about it. Identity is fluid or difficult to describe sometimes. Try not to let what you identify with dictate how you feel. It should be the other way around.

Random observation:
*sigh* I really wish that humanity as a whole didn't always feel the need to put everything into tidy little categories. Some things just can't be that easily explained, and by trying to do so we always end up oversimplifying things. By trying to quantify gender and sexual identity to try to list its full range (asexual, homosexual, heterosexual, transgender, genderqueer etc.), we've managed to alienate people who don't fall neatly into any of these categories... and I'm sure there are many.
