Anon with the friend whose mother was hospitalised with a brain haemorrhage: she has by now opened her eyes for a bit and seems to be reacting slightly to her family. It's obviously still much too early to say anything and there could always be more complications down the line but she survived so far and that alone is more than we were expecting this time last week so... baby steps.

I never replied to the original comment, and don't want to get your hopes up needlessly, but I've known both a family member and neighbour who've had brain hemorrhages in the past, and both died instantly. I can't guess what mental fallbacks your friends mother might have, but the fact she survived at all makes me believe she may recover. If not fully, then marginally at the very least.
Of course this doesn't make the agony of a loved one being in the balance any easier, but I sincerely hope the best for you, your friend, and her family.

Thank you very much. Yeah, I'm trying to reign in my hopes because there's no telling what might happen still but I'm mostly glad she's survived and shows some tentatively positive signs. I don't have any illusions that she won't have any limitations after this but her mother also had a similar case and managed to live for another 20 years with some decent quality of life so I'm just hoping resilience lies in the family and medicine has made more progress over the last 20 years as well.
