I just recently found out most people are writing fic and college essays and everything on their phones. I cannot imagine doing such a thing! Typing on my phone is so annoying, give me a full physical keyboard if I'm writing anything longer than a comment.

I also recently learned that a lot of newer writers (or the implication was it was only newer writers) on AO3 are writing their fic directly in the AO3 website and then getting annoyed or sad or mad if the site goes down and they lose all their work. Just wild.

I cannot imagine typing anything more than a few short texts on a phone keyboard! Maybe some of the Bluetooth keyboards that work with tablets work with phones?

There are bluetooth keyboards that work with phones - I have one for when I travel and don't want to bring a laptop - but I think most people are legit just typing on their phone keyboard. I have a friend that is a college professor and they were not shocked at all when I told them this!

I went back to college a few years ago in my late 40s and wrote my papers wherever and however I could. It was really convenient to be able to jot sentences or even whole paragraphs into my phone even if I was grocery shopping or doing the dishes or something. I sync my phone notes app to my computer so I could just copy and paste into the Word doc and then format everything. Also, my phone has great speech to text recognition with my voice and accent, so I could even add to my assignments when I was driving or do other stuff that had my hands full. But formatting it on my phone would have sucked and so would submitting assignments. My school had a submission process that was a lot like AO3’s and in my mind, computer is the only way to do it.

I can definitely see how jotting down notes and text to speech would be a game changer for writing and college work! It's just writing anything longer would drive me nuts lol

Off topic, but how did you find going back to college in your late 40s? I'm 43 and thinking of going back because I never finished my degree and not having it is holding me back in my career. But I also haven't used those parts of my brain in so long I fear it will be too hard at this point. Also just college as a whole has changed so much since I was last in I'm worried about being overwhelmed just by the whole endeavor.

I was in distance learning so take this with a grain of salt. Honestly it was wonderful and awful at the same time. I couldn’t think the same way as my classmates. Part of that was life experience and part was that my brain just isn’t as fast or as adaptable. The most frustrating part was how hard I worked and seeing others who hadn’t learned anything or even met the rubric get the same grades (about half of the assignments were posted on a message board and we all had to interact.) I ended up dropping out because I don’t need a degree in my field and I have a lot of other qualifications that give me an advantage. I, quite hilariously, only wanted to go to school to learn. I got some of that from classes but not much. But as a distance learning student I had access to the most amazing libraries! I glommed countless research papers, scientific journals, and textbooks. I also totally abused my access to keep up with research about a medical condition that rules my life. The library access was easily the best part of going back and I almost stayed just for that. But I was paying out of pocket and the price jumped along with the cost of living so I quit and went back to work.

I use my Notes app to write brief scenes when inspiration strikes but could NOT write an entire fic that way!

Was discussing the AO3 thing with some writers on a Discord recently and we couldn't believe it. I've always completed my fic elsewhere before going into the upload box.
