Has anyone else gotten bruises after a massage? I had a deep tissue massage on wednesday. I get them all the time, every two weeks at this point. Don't have an issue normally. It did hurt a bit more in places, but I was expecting that because I had some muscle strains that were new.

But I've got some bruises now in one of the spots that was strained (left hip/upper leg). I've never had bruises after a massage before. Is this normal?

Depending on the massage and the state of your muscles. I've gotten therapeutic massages (basically deep tissue on steroids) on extreeeeeemely tight muscles and they've left bruises (as they should; that shit hurts like a motherfucker, I should have something to show for it). I've shown them to my massage therapist and she was very proud.

Beats me, I bruise so easily that I would expect them as a matter of course. I've woken up with bruises after sleeping in an awkward position before.

mood apps

(Anonymous) 2025-09-14 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
does anyone here use any mood tracking apps? recently diagnosed bipolar and it was suggested i may find tracking my moods helpful, and doing it with just notes is not working for me.

i'm looking other places too just curious if anyone here has any personal recs.

Reminder: "Secrets you don't want to make..." thread is still open!

Sequels without the Original?

[personal profile] philstar22 2025-09-13 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Anyone else every watched and/or gotten into the sequel of something without ever seeing the first thing?

Inspired by my current desire to watch The Paper due to Domhnall Gleason, in spite of having never watched a single Office episode.

I started watching Due South in the third season, which came after a hiatus, and I consider, due to changing up one of the main actors, to be a kind of sequel to the first two seasons of the show. I've not seen the first two, other than the pilot episode, because they didn't really catch me. But the rest of the show was great.

I watched The Mummy Returns before I watched The Mummy, loved it and watched the first to see where it all started and loved that even more.

Watched The Jeffersons without having watched All in the Family, though I was young enough that I didn't realize it was a spinoff for a long time.

Watched NCIS without having watched JAG.

Watched The Flash (2014) and Legends of Tomorrow without having watched Arrow.

lol TIL that NCIS was a Jag sequel. In my defense I've only watched a handful of episodes!

I didn’t realize that The Paper was related to The office at all.

It is a spin off where the schtick is the same, an office filmed by the same documentary crew. But totally different characters and office. And looks funnier?

I do with video games often. Sometimes it inspires me to go back and play the originals leading up to whatever game draws me in, and sometimes I'm happy to either live in ignorance or just happy to read all the lore.

Is The Paper a sequel? For some reason I thought it was a same universe spin-off.

I got obsessed with Fire Emblem Path of Radiance, and that was my introduction to the series.

And I started reading The Outsider not knowing it came after the Bill Hodges trilogy.

Video games count? When I first got my PS3, I did it for Bioshock 2 after falling in love with one of the trailers for it, just played 1 some time later.

I also played Transformers Fall of Cybertron before the first game War for Cybertron, and it was what got me into Transformers.

My college anime club wanted to watch Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children and swore to us who hadn't played FFVII that we didn't need to know anything about it to understand the movie. They either lied big time or were so blinded by their own knowledge of the original that they couldn't tell they were wrong.

I went to the theatres to see Dune 2 without having watched the first one (still haven't).

As a child I saw The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi before watching A New Hope.
I watched Revenge of the Sith without having watched The Phantom Menace or Attack of the Clones.

My first exposure to Harry Potter was seeing Chamber of Secrets at the theatres.

I watched Jojo's Bizarre Adeventure in the middle of Diamond is Unbreakable (though I did watch from the beginning before completing DiU).

I got into Buffy the Vampire Slayer during the third season.

Revisiting old fandoms - things that stand out

(Anonymous) 2025-09-13 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I am rereading some old fic and it is American military themed and I had totally forgotten how much drama there was around DADT! Just struck me as funny that it was just a normal thing back in the day that really dates the fic now.

Anyone else revisit older fandoms and have little dated things that stuck out to you?

Gay couples having civil unions.

I was in the military during this period, so if the characters are too (like the original Top Gun, they'd better be dealing with this. Also, less acceptance overall. Closeted people would be worried about other characters finding out they're gay for that reason as well.

I had a roommate who was clearly gay but hiding it and I just wanted to say, "you know, I do NOT care. Feel free to vent with me about your girlfriend or whatever, girl," but I respected her wish to be discreet overall. My big boss (senior enlisted) was also gay and I didn't find that out until years later on Facebook. His Wizard of Oz figurines and fondness for musicals should have been a bigger clue, in retrospect.

I wouldn't call it a "fandom" because it was a mid comedy show, but the episode of Drawn Together where there's a pretend gay marriage to get health insurance hit different 20 years ago, lol.
