Nah, you don't need a unifying topic. I'm in a few servers that are just friend servers where a bunch of us from a particular fandom or social activity made a server for us to chat about anything and everything, not just the fandom or activity. We do groupwatches, play things like Jackbox sometimes, post photos of our pets, share recipes, stuff like that. It's basically just a hangout space.
