...what does actually define a cozy game?

I feel like I've seen people use it in multiple ways. Sometimes it's about relaxed gameplay: something without fighting or time pressure. Sometimes it's about comforting themes: low-conflict life simulation. And I guess a lot of the time the two overlap.

Be fair, Star Trek has never been a hotbed of originality. They've always liberally sampled from other media. The whole damn franchise is "Wagon Train to the stars".

I saw a Youtube vid the other day that was... something about "cozy" games, I forget what, and it used Books from Cobalt Core as the thumbnail.

And look. Books is cute as hell. And Cobalt Core is a pretty lighthearted game. But I would never call it cozy.

I don't think it has a proper definition. Just a game that makes people feel cozy, I guess.

"Cozy" makes me think of curling up in a big fluffy blanket with a mug of hot cocoa and reading a book. I'd call a game cozy if it gave me the same feeling.

That's not until the fourth series in the franchise - CSI: Cyber, NCIS: Hawai'i, Batwoman, Law & Order: Trial by Jury (though SVU did get there eventually), Star Trek: Voyager. Everybody knows that.

Long-running fandom misconceptions

[personal profile] iff_and_xor 2025-09-14 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)

Inspired by #4, are there any misconceptions you carried for a long time about characters or stories?

Do you remember what led to your misconception and what eventually straightened it out for you?

(Anonymous) 2025-09-14 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)

I know that's not Peter Krause. (He was on a different firefighting show? Or played a different firefighter on the same show??) But my brain really really wants it to be him.

Low stakes and none of the typical major triggers - gore, etc. Mostly it is a feeling, which is vague and unhelpful.

Does thay say nueroatypical? Is that the same as nuerodivergent? I've never seen the term before.

Wikipedia says a cozy game is 'a video game which emphasizes non-violence and relaxation. Initially derived from the life simulation genre, cozy games commonly include activities such as gathering and growing plants and nurturing other characters. They often have open-ended goals that encourage self-expression.'

'Wired's Louryn Strampe described the genre as "meant to evoke feelings of warmth, comfort, and peace".'

A lot of my misconceptions were from thinking things in the LOTR movies were how it happened in canon. I read the books once as a kid, but I didn't really get into them. Whereas I loved the movie.

I didn't realize that Frodo was actually the same age when he started out on the journey as Bilbo was on his journey for example.

I think OP mixed it. Neurotypical is the opposite of ND
