Does thay say nueroatypical? Is that the same as nuerodivergent? I've never seen the term before.

I think OP mixed it. Neurotypical is the opposite of ND

Huh, I was just reading it as "neurotypical", missing the "a" entirely, and assumed they got their terms mixed up.

I've never seen "neuroatypical" either.

ayrt - yeah it took me staring at it for awhile. The font used plus just not being a word I've seen had me doubting my reading abilities lol

ah...

(Anonymous) 2025-09-14 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
It’s another word for the same thing. I’m not OP, but I personally prefer “neuroatypical” over “neurodivergent”, because to me the word divergent sounds powerful, like something to be proud of, and I *hate* my disability and how it’s directed my life.

As a nuerodivergent person with dyslexia, neuroatypical is such a difficult word for me to read and write, which means I hate it. But I support people using whatever words they like.

OP Here

Yes, I did mean neuroatypical.

That was the first term differentiating from neurotypicality I was introduced to, and it is the term I’m more comfortable using for myself.

Re: OP Here

And yes, it is more or less synonymous with neurodivergence, but possessing slightly different connotations, if I recall correctly.

Well today I learned a new term. Thank you for clearing that up!

(Anonymous) 2025-09-14 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
As someone who struggles with social anxiety and who might be On The Spectrum, working in tourism (hospitality adjacent, IMO) was a great environment for me. Scripts! Structured, goal oriented interactions! Clear roles and context! Infodumping all day! I get it, OP.

(Anonymous) 2025-09-14 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Same! I have been diagnosed with autism twice and the jobs I had the easiest time in socially were the ones were I was a waitress, a tour guide and customer service because the truth is: everyone tells the same jokes, asks the same questions, has the same problems. It's all very formulaic, which was perfect for my autistic ass.

(Anonymous) 2025-09-14 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I am not on the spectrum but I do have social anxiety and I love structured "customer service" type interactions with people! I know exactly what my role is and what to say, a straight forward goal like you said, and as a people pleaser I love being able to help and make people happy.

Forever dying on the hill that terms like neurodivergent are useless and do more harm than good precisely because of situations like OP. Neurodivergent covers such a vast spectrum of behaviours and needs, including literal opposites, that it's mostly useless as a descriptor or to make any sort of assumptions because of it, especially since most of the drawn assumptions are based on a very narrow, stereotypical type of neurodivergency. /end rant

OP, I'm really happy the show led you to a job you love! That's such a great thing and makes life so much better.

(Anonymous) 2025-09-14 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
But isn't that the point of neurodivergent? That it's not a specific thing but a large umbrella term? I also don't see how OPs term is any more helpful for what you are saying.

(Anonymous) 2025-09-14 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Ayrt

I'm using neurodivergent because afaik the term OP uses is a synonym. I'm not trying to make a statement about using one term over the other, sorry if that wasn't clear.

My point is that in most situations, neurodivergent/neuroatypical is too big of an umbrella term as to be useful. OP might just as well have said they had misgivings because they're a white woman - sure, but that doesn't say anything about their ability to work the front desk of a hotel. There is a specific type of white woman who might be bad at the job and who people might think of when they hear "white woman" - the Karen stereotype - but that is a far narrower definition than the large umbrella term used. And people who are not white women might exhibit the same traits as a "Karen" as well, so being white and a woman is really not an indication for anything.

Neuroatypical covers traits that would make working in hospitality harder. It also covers traits that would make people thrive in hospitality. Therefore, using the term to gauge whether anyone is suited to work in hospitality is useless unless we also know which specific traits that person has.

Oh gotcha. Yeah I misread that, thanks for being kind in your clarification.

I see your overall point. It is kind of how I feel about 'autism' as a label to a degree because the spectrum is so large that it doesn't really mean much. The words are helpful in some situations, unhelpful in other ways.

I actually think a lot of labels are unhelpful when talking, especially online, and that people tend to blame personality on whatever label they have. Like I see so many people say "due to X" and then describe a behavior that so many people outside the X label have.

That's amazing OP! I'm so glad you found a place that makes you happy, kudos on going for it like you did. <3
