Long-running fandom misconceptions

[personal profile] iff_and_xor 2025-09-14 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)

Inspired by #4, are there any misconceptions you carried for a long time about characters or stories?

Do you remember what led to your misconception and what eventually straightened it out for you?

A lot of my misconceptions were from thinking things in the LOTR movies were how it happened in canon. I read the books once as a kid, but I didn't really get into them. Whereas I loved the movie.

I didn't realize that Frodo was actually the same age when he started out on the journey as Bilbo was on his journey for example.

I was in my 40s before I realized that Annie's comment in Speed about having done extensive research on relationships that start under intense circumstances was a joke. I legit thought for decades that she was a researcher. Dunno if that would count as a fandom misconception, 'cause that was really just ordinary 'tism.

For the longest time I thought Alpharad was a generic, sexist, homophobic gamer bro dickhead. I still don't really like most of his content but wow, I really had a completely wrong impression of him as a person.

Writing partners

(Anonymous) 2025-09-14 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm just curious if anyone here has had a writing partner before and if so how you found them and how that worked out for you.

Mostly curious about more of the accountability type partner, but cheerleader, co-writer, etc experiences are all welcome!

If you haven't ever had one, have you ever wanted one?

I co-wrote with someone for years in the Buffy fandom. It was mostly great! We would discuss a story idea, figure out where we wanted to go with each chapter/the overall story, then trade off writing. I mostly wrote Spike, so my chapters would usually be from his POV, they mostly wrote Xander, so same for them. We'd write while we chatted on an instant messenger (i miss Yahoo messenger, it was actually really great!), and work out any issues or make sure were were still on track.

A few times our writing styles made us have a bit of a row, but nothing too heated; mostly just word choices or character choices.

I really enjoyed it. We wrote a lot of fun stuff, and had a great friendship. We're still friends, we just don't write together anymore; our storytelling seemed to come to a natural end.

I've never had one but have always wanted one. I had a fandom friend yearrrs ago and we would talk fic over AIM, both our own and ones we'd read in our fandom, but it never quite made it to actual writing partners.

Random tangent, but I miss messengers like AIM and Yahoo. I know texting is basically the same but it doesn't have the same feel for me. I loved leaving AIM up and coming up with silly away messages and then coming back and seeing messages left for me and randomly chatting with whoever was online.

I usually find my writing partners when I go into a fandom and meet someone on the same wavelength as me, surprisingly it's happened multiple times now. You need to be open to collaboration and being criticized but generally I've had a good time with it.

Unfortunately I was dating my last writing partner and we're now broken up so I'm sitting here wondering if I'll ever write again or if my life is over haha. So I don't recommend doing that...

ugh

(Anonymous) 2025-09-14 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been sick for the last two days because I react badly to vaccines. I know it means it's working, and I know this is better than eventually getting COVID, but right now it sucks. Anyone else get vaccine side effects?

Re: ugh

(Anonymous) 2025-09-14 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
That suuuucks. I've never gotten any major side effects, though the very first covid shot I did get just wiped out tired for the first day after a couple hours after the shot.

My friend said she felt like she got full on covid after the vaccines and it lasted about 48hrs.

Ugh, that's awful and I hope you feel better soon.

One or two of the rounds of COVID vaccines really knocked me out. Two or three days of all-over muscle aches and bad fatigue.

And after some other vaccine I got a huge inflamed spot around the injection, a hot and red and faintly itchy area covering most of my upper arm.

As you say, better than the disease, but still not fun.

I'm so sorry. I'm in the same boat. Got both flu and covid yesterday morning. felt miserable ever since. Feel like I have the flu. Still better than actually getting covid. But my throat is on fire, and I can barely drag myself out of bed.

Really hoping I'm better tomorrow because I have so much I need to get done this week at work.

Still better than the time my sister and I both passed out after getting a covid shot.

I usually get a really sore arm from stuff like the flu shot that goes away the next day. For the COVID vaccine, the first one was fine (just a sore arm like usual) but the boosters resulted in a VERY sore arm and 24 hours of fatigue and feeling like I was coming down with something. Then it went away.

I've only ever reacted to one COVID vax, and it made my arm hurt SO FUCKING BAD. For like a week. Plus I felt run down and just meh. But nothing too horrible. Hope you feel better soon!

First time getting the COVID vaccine I ran a fever of 102 for the whole weekend and could barely get out of bed. Second time (and booster time) were much better.

Everything else I've been much better with. Slight cold-like symptoms with flu vaccines every once in a while but nothing to write home about.

Yes, I always get a temperature and at least 2 days of nausea and fatigue. Except when I got my whooping cough vaccine updated, for some reason that was fine!

Where do you find new music?

(Anonymous) 2025-09-14 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Spotify has turned into a "my liked music" echo chamber even if I put it on smart shuffle. It used to be so much better for finding random new music.

Way back in the day, I found fanvids were the best place to find new music but that hasn't been true for years.

Pandora. setting up a channel based on one artist will literally pump out stuff I've never heard before. Lindsay Sterling led me to Two Steps From Hell, Darude led me to Ummet Ozcan, Magic Sword led me to the entire genre of metal-synthwave and at least a dozen bands I now follow.

the ads on the free version are annoying but honestly not as bad as Spotify.

Fave genre of video games?

(Anonymous) 2025-09-14 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Inspired by secret #2.

and your favorite example of the genre?

Re: Fave genre of video games?

I am tempted to say MMORPG just because the original Guild Wars in my favorite game, but it is a pretty unique example of an MMORPG.

Otherwise just in general I like rpgs. The Assassin's Creed games and Dragon Age games are some of my favorites.

I have no memory of being there

(Anonymous) 2025-09-14 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I am revisiting an old fandom and I remember some of the popular fic but others are new to me and I am having a lot of fun....until I go to give kudos and get the "you have already left kudos here" thing and then I sit there baffled. I have zero memory of reading these fics XD It makes me a teensy bit concerned about my memory, but mostly it just makes it fun to discover 'new' fic and enjoy them for the 'first time' all over again.

have you ever started your own discord channel?

(Anonymous) 2025-09-15 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
I have this idea of starting a random discord and just inviting people that I run into on the internet that I think are fun into it so I'd just collect cool people to chat with. But it seems people need a unifying topic to join and I don't really have one.

If you got a random discord invite to a super secret cool kids club would you join or would you assume it was weirdo spam? Have you ever started your own community?
