People always say "people aren't reading well anymore" but honestly, I think literacy is very, very high, historically. It's just that the requirement to be literate is also very high. I live in a rural area and know some illiterate older men who have always just worked on farms and never had any problems (their wives do the bookwork and relevant reading) but if their wife dies suddenly there's a big problem. Like, there was no time in history as literate as now; there was also no time in history where you had to interact with authorities in text as much as now, even in my lifetime.
