Re: Weekend Plans?

I’m batch cooking all weekend, including all the prep. I’m making six batches of chicken noodle soup in the instant pot and six batches of dog food in the crock pot. I also have to scramble 3 dozen eggs separately to add to the dog food and chop dried cranberries, too. It’s going to be a very busy weekend but I’m so happy to finally be in a position to do this.

That is a lot of cooking! Do you freeze for weeks/months later or are you eating it all next week?

The plan is to freeze dry everything as a test run. I have an appointment with the vet on Tuesday to discuss the recipe I put together and what supplements I’ll need to give under different circumstances. The dog food is mainly meant for backpacking, so we need to be sure it will meet my dog’s needs as we work on conditioning for longer distances. His nutritional needs are wildly different between home life, 6 hour hike days, and 12 hour hike days. We actually have never done more than 4 hours of hiking because we couldn’t go regularly enough to condition for longer days but that has changed and his diet needs to change, too. Plus, dog food is fucking heavy LOL I’d freeze dry his canned food that he eats at home but it has too high of a fat content. I have to make my own and carry oil packets to add when I reconstitute it. It should still work out to significantly less weight. And if it doesn’t, at least I don’t have to worry about it spoiling and it will be easier to pack into the bear canister.
