Tastes change as you get older, it happens. But also perhaps you've gotten bored of the fandom style of smut-fic, I enjoy it but it does absolutely follow along the same kinds of tropes even if the characters and situations differ. So it wouldn't surprise me that people will get bored of that over time.

+1 to this, it can feel same-y. I like switching fandoms (to a fandom where another style of writing is most popular), and reading original erotica for awhile when I get bored of my fandoms' writing.

You're not imagining things, writing quality is so crap now. IMO it's because of publishers, they started letting whatever QC they had slip because they saw how Twilight did gangbusters despite being mediocre. Fanfic was better 20 years ago because it was written by people who read books that were a lot higher quality than what's available now and learned a lot of technique from them. I think the current batch of writers (including fanfic veterans that have had their brains cooked by reels/Tiktok AND the internet switching over to an image based culture instead of a writing based culture) are much worse at writing because the quality of literature that they're reading in their off time has gone downhill. The problem is that's not something you notice unless you deliberately seek out older lit!

Same, OP. I still read fic with those ratings, i just mostly skip the smut parts. I'm just...i dunno. Over them, I guess. Mostly, my own personal kinks aren't usually represented (or not represented in a way I find interesting), and I'm tired of the fandom cliches of smut and sex tropes. So...yeah.

Same. You can pretty much sub out character names for the most of it and nothing will change. Smut's always the most generic part of a fic, imo.
I still read mature/explicit fic though, and just skim past the sexy bits. Mostly because some people really just don't know how to tag and'll use 'explicit' for light swearing "just in case", also I'm a fan of certain genres that are generally rated mature.
