I have many thoughts about Bucky in this movie, most of them boil down to "I wish he wasn't there" even though he's probably my all time fave from the MCU.

I'm kind of over Bucky, so YMMV, but I agree. It seems like they tacked him in randomly somewhere late into production.

Disagree. I can see your point, and wish he'd been integrated better, but I feel his character fits thematically with the others. I like this version of him better than TFATWS one at least.

I agree that he fits thematically with the others, but I thought he felt wrong for this chapter in those characters’ development.

I can see how it could have been considered a necessary publicity boost, getting in a bigger legacy name from the MCU. But I would have preferred him showing up in their next movie, assuming we get one.

DA but same. I get why they thought he would be a good bridge to bring in the new team, he does fit thematically, but the execution was just lacking. He felt like a "he's contracted for X number of movies so we have to use him" plus "we need a big name" kind of tacked on.

we don't talk enough about what a fucking mess fatws was.

(Anonymous) 2025-09-25 11:32 am (UTC)(link)
No, we do not. Bucky’s story arc was a complete mess in TFatWS.

The whole show was such bullshit.

I like Bucky and I like that movie and I think I agree.

The rest of the characters could have used the extra time for a little more team development.

I also don’t really get the whole Bucky-goes-into-politics plotline. Admittedly, I did skip Brave New World, so maybe something important was established there. But it felt poorly thought out and like they were just running some character growth in the background, a bit like Bruce Banner in the later Avengers movies.

You didn't miss anything important in BNW, don't worry. (Bucky has a cameo, but it's about him showing up to support Sam when another of Sam's friends nearly dies, it doesn't get into his personal arc at all.)

I ended up being reluctantly charmed by how weird and nonsensical his short-lived political career was. But it sure was weird and nonsensical.

I did like his role in Thunderbolts. He's already at the far end of the "scary shadow-ops assassin character gets to break free of that life and rebuild themselves as a celebrated public hero" journey that the rest of the team is starting on, so that added an extra layer to the group dynamic that I'm not sure any other MCU character could've brought.

They'll use him until people get so sick of him they can call themselves right for what they put him through in civil war.

It's been a while, but isn't he on the team in the comics? Or is that Hawkeye?

(Anonymous) 2025-09-25 02:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I strongly disagree. While there were some issues with the way he was integrated into the rest of the team, I liked this version of Bucky way more than I liked what we got in FATWS. I think he works well as a bit of a mentor figure.
