I found out about Bubsy 22 years ago via a Sonic fansite that had a list of "knockoff" platformers, and one unironic fansite that is probably offline. But it's mainly because he's memeable. I didn't like the game when I trialed it, but it's far from the worst when Awesome Possum is right there.

Bubsy is a cat that collects threads. Colorful threads, even. What’s there not to love. Have you seen his funny faces? I ain’t even joking I have liked Bubsy since I was 6. If Bubsy has no fans I don’t exist lol

The controls were too slippery when I played it via emulator, and the catch phrases got annoying. I didn't have a Genesis/SNES when I grew up so I just missed the magic. The new game kind of looks fun at least.
