SO many people really do take it as a personal attack. And I get that, to a degree. But also your friend needs to separate the art from the artist. She can still find meaning and comfort in the works and also admit that this dude is a creep. I feel like sometimes the people that feel like its a personal attack don't understand that. They feel like you are both attacking them and trying to take away something they enjoy or was meaningful.

The sad thing is that there is little you can do. Like you can explain all this to them but it probably won't click. Hopefully maybe somewhere down the road with a little self refection they will understand, but I don't blame you for noping out of that friendship.

THANK YOU. I still find many of his pieces very readable and am, if anything, frustrated and disappointed at how this is shaking out. (Many other problematic folks whose works I like happen to be long dead so at least even if I get books firsthand the money's not going to defending them or supporting some awful cause of theirs.)

Agreed. Though to be fair, a lot of the talk surrounding the sexual assault allegations and the general fandom attitude about that separation can make this difficult - a lot of people can't/won't/don't agree with the idea that you can separate the art from the artist. The accusations against Gaiman are so serious in nature and it went so against the feminist ally public persona he maintained that it's going to be even harder to do that as opposed to just cancelling him outright.

Disclaimer: I've been a fan of Gaiman's work for years now, and while I agree that the art can be separated from the artist, I'm not sure I personally will be able to do that. I haven't read or reread anything of his since, and I've packed away the Gaiman books I own in a closet. Maybe one day I'll feel differently, maybe I won't. I support other peoples' rights to decide this for themselves.

I feel you!
I was a fan of his works, they brought me a lot of joy and friends. I've made a lot of fanart etc. I sometimes even still quote them.
But I am not sure that I am going to be able to separate his works from his... everything anytime soon. I still got his works, most of them were bought because of illustrations, but rereading isn't something I want to do.
