I honestly find the handling of racism in the Netflix DMC anime to be dumb af. It’s dumb how they portrayed the demons as an oppressed ethnicity, but all the non-evil demons look almost entirely human but the evil ones look like monsters or plants. So basically the humanoid ones are the fantasy equivalent of lightskin and the evil ones darkskin?

Also the concept of making the demons Arab coded was lowkey problematic.

...Weren't Echidna and them all who Dante fights demon freedom fighters essentially? And they look... Nonhuman???

No, the non-human-looking demons were terrorists who tortured/experimented on children and trapped their parents in a tenement, the innocent refugees/freedom-fighters were the human-looking ones, OP does kind of have a point.

You might be surprised, but there are actually ethnicities outside of 'dark and light'. Even within your definition of 'arab'.
Go look for some therapy. You definitely need it.

You do realize that therapy isn't magic and it isn't a cure for "opinions i disagree with"? Besides therapy (at least in America) isn't cheap.

You don't actually give a damn about OP's mental health you just don't like OP's opinions.

Soooo I know this isn't a popular opinion re: the DMC anime, but I'm quite partial to adaptations that try to do something different/bold, even if they fumble the bag along the way, as opposed to rote rehashings of the same story beat-for-beat in a different medium, or worse, tepid filler slop where nothing happens because they can't do anything meaningful that would be non-canon (like the first DMC anime, which sucked ass). So I appreciated the refugees/America, Fuck Yeah that 99% of the fandom seems to have hated.

However, I agree with you anon that this is where it lost me: if the purpose of your story is to "empathize with those different from you" and "acknowledge their own internal complexity/differences/not just assume they're all slavering evil hordes", you can't rightly use "the good ones look human and the bad ones don't" as a shorthand. It defeats the entire purpose of the message. Because now it's "empathize with those like you, those not like you really were evil slavering hordes all along".

No cutesy nuclear families with babies and bottles (demons are mammals????????), if you want to convey this message, stop being a coward about it make the reader sympathize with the one-eyed four-legged lava-beam-beast and what it's got going on in its life.
