I think I just don't play the kinds of video games where alcohol features, but as another sober alcoholic, I can definitely see that being an issue for me if I had to make choices about my character drinking. Not something that would necessarily stop me playing, but something that would be slightly more difficult or irritating than the game probably intended.

As an aside, it's nice to get these occasional mentions from other sober people of all kinds... people not drinking for different reasons, people who've been sober for different lengths of time. Makes it feel like a less lonely path and like I can see my way a bit further ahead.

Congrats to you and OP. I am coming up on 7 years sober myself. I'm an alcoholic too and many of my relatives have serious problems with it, I really didn't want alcohol to be part of my life anymore. I miss the social and culinary aspects of drinking sometimes but I'm a lot happier this way, it's been so worth it for me. Feel so much more clearheaded and peaceful, though the first couple years were definitely tough.

There aren't a lot of games where this is a thing, but when it is it's almost trigger-level. For example, if you play any of the Yakuza games, you literally have to drink your way through 3-5 bars in every game to get completion, and being drunk is a power boost, so DO NOT PLAY. As fun as they are, you'll never get completion if you don't expose yourself to this mechanic. You're better off not playing.

So ime it's an all or nothing. Most games, it's barely a passing reference, maybe a sake cup drunk as an oath or a single cut scene in an optional romance. In a small handful, it's literally a mechanic. There is no in-between that would feel safe to anyone in recovery.
