Transcript - [Serena Williams]

(Anonymous) 2025-10-08 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
[Serena Williams next to a vase full of cotton branches on a hotel sidetable, with the quote “Alright, everyone. How do we feel about cotton as decoration? Personally for me, it doesn’t feel great.”]

If Serena Williams is trying to imply that a piece of hotel room decor is a racist statement… yeah, IDK man. It’s probably not that deep. Kind of like how the generic paintings are just chosen to be bland background aesthetic, and not because they’re revolutionary artistic statements.

This seems particularly silly and performative because… is she boycotting cotton in all forms? Doubt it. Because you know what else “doesn’t feel great”? Polyester sheets and towels, LOL.

Did Williams say she didn't like it because she thought it was racist or does she just think it's ugly for whatever reason? It is entirely possible for her to simply dislike a piece of decor, even if it's a cotton stick, because she just finds it ugly. Unless she explicitly said something like "This is racist against black people" or something like that, I'm willing to give her the benefit of the doubt and assume she just doesn't like it for whatever reasons.

People are allowed to not like things for reasons that aren't tied to big societal issues; they can just dislike things for some petty reason that doesn't mean anything. I, a white person, don't like the color black. Does that mean I actually hate black people or could I just prefer the color blue instead?

like, is it weird? a little. it's not about the fabric/fiber, it's the literal cotton bole which would be harvested being used as decoration. tbh even without the racist angle I'd roll my eyes hard at whoever's terrible decorating sense made them think the cotton bole was a great decorative plant, equal to or better than a plastic orchid. is it deliberately racist? no. is it stupid? yes.

I hope her post is just something along the lines of "wow this is unpleasantly weird" and not pitchforks out boycott and sue the hotel. I'd be with her on "wow," but I'd consider it overreacting if she was actually suing the hotel for causing a hostile environment.

You're missing the "As a decoration" qualifier, I think.

(Anonymous) 2025-10-08 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean as an aesthetic choice it’s awful so I’m with her on that front.

(Anonymous) 2025-10-09 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
It's possible that, racist undertones aside, it just looks like lint on a stick to her.

She's a moron.

Not knowing the situation outside of this secret: Bad aesthetic taste, yes, making a 'bouquet' based on minimalism combined with a corporate color scheme is just bad choices all around. Bad societal taste, eh, not sure I buy it. Unless the hotel is in the Deep South and they redecorated just for her.

(Anonymous) 2025-10-09 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
It's a terrible decoration that's going to be so horribly dusty. Is it racist? Only if they put it there specifically for her, but I can see why she wouldn't be thrilled with it.

I've begun to not take her seriously ever since she started shilling out for yet another GLP-1 company. To be fair, the use of straight up cotton as a decoration looks cheap and stupid.

(Anonymous) 2025-10-09 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
If you are used to seeing racism everywhere, you'll end up seeing racism anywhere.

(Anonymous) 2025-10-09 06:07 am (UTC)(link)
I would not be able to begin to guess if she meant it's racist or it's just ugly, because the other day I heard that real estate companies are telling their agents not to say "master bedroom" anymore because it connotes slavery. I thought that had to be a story invented by anti-woke trolls to show how wokeness has gone mad, but I looked it up and it's true. And the term doesn't even come from that meaning of "master," as everyone else probably rightly knows.

(Anonymous) 2025-10-09 03:03 pm (UTC)(link)
There also was a bit of a kerfuffle in the tech world about the master-slave drive thing. Which is definitely more valid than the bedroom/bathroom thing but yeah.

Well now I feel weird

(Anonymous) 2025-10-09 04:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Because I think the cotton sprig is kind of pretty? Like yes, it's minimalist and plain but white is a color and it has texture and it (hopefully) isn't More Fucking Plastic. I wouldn't decorate my own home (dust trap from hell) but for hotel decor it outranks that awful fake plastic grass I used to see on tables.

On another note - what the fuck is up with her glove? Is that latex? Why is she only wearing one? Ma'am go get eyepro and another glove and maybe a labcoat STAT.

I was guessing she only has one on because she took the other off to feel the cotton.

Fascinating that this is the part you reply to. I love it. Ok. Why is she wearing latex looking gloves inside? And in a picture? And why take off only one glove to pull part of the decorative plant apart?

I may be the weird one out, but when I'm in a hotel and I want to tear a few leaves off of a potted plant I take both of my gloves off.

They don't look latex, just shiny leather or other material. One gloved hand to hold and pull it off, one hand to test the texture. It looks like she is coming(or going) to an event and the gloves are part of the outfit.

If I'm on my way to/from and event and I have gloves on and I see something I want to poke or touch I'm not gonna bother peeling off both gloves.

Not everything is racist, Serena. Cotton is just a fabric and that is just a fancy shmancy accessory. Calm down a bit!
