they absolutely have effective birth control

(also traditional hunter-gatherer societies absolutely use lactational amenorrhea as a form of birth control/family planning, so that's as natural as anything else about our species.)

also it's not unfashionable it's literally goddamn everywhere, everyone knows. a story that is not even primarily ABOUT het romance does not need to summon or indulge that ~~hovering specter~~ when it weakens the rest of the story.

Traditional societies use amenorrhea because having too many children at one time impacts the survival of the group. They don't do it so that they can have childfree romance.
