I'm apprehensive about the new Harry Potter audiobooks. I listen to the old ones at night when I can't sleep, and I'm not sure that the new ones are going to be the same, so I think I am going to pass on them. They don't sound like they're going to be peaceful and soothing.

It shouldn't be peaceful and soothing. You should be anxious. Every second you listen, JKR is hurting more trans people.

You replied to the transcript instead of the thread as a whole, were you aware?

(Anonymous) 2025-10-16 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Are the old ones going to become unavailable? Or are you just saying you have no interest in checking out something new when what you have works fine.

I mean, good, don’t give her more money.

(Anonymous) 2025-10-16 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Like seriously if you can't just give up harry potter then the least you can do IS to listen to the audiobooks you already own. No one's making you change.

I buy groceries, clothes, etc. from corporations whose vile political lobbying outstrips JKR's, so I have zero judgement whatsoever for people who still buy HP merch. But that doesn't really seem to be the point of this post (or is it?). I'm honestly not sure what the point of this post actually is. Why are you apprehensive? Are you going to be forced to listen to these new versions of the books and not your old, much loved versions?

I don't quite get the concept of being "apprehensive" about media you've already decided you're not going to engage with.

(Anonymous) 2025-10-16 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
Like several others, I don't get it. You own the audiobooks of your choice, and are free to keep using them like you have been doing, right? What does it matter how the new audiobooks are like? It makes no difference to you, does it? Especially since no one will be forcing you to listen to them. How could their very existence make you "apprehensive"?

I think OP means distrusts their quality, un-hyped

(Anonymous) 2025-10-16 11:32 am (UTC)(link)
They already have audio books of the series that they like. “The exact same thing, but worse” is not a product that they want or need, so why even waste time worrying about the new ones? Be glad that you already own what you want and don’t have to waste money on an inferior product.

That's not how it works. If you're a fan you're gonna check out the special edition the Ultra HD edition, the new audiobooks and so on. Fans also tend to hope for more of the same. So OP might be hopefull about the new edition for a minute.

(Anonymous) 2025-10-16 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt - You say that like all fans do that... no? I enjoyed the LOTR movies, I own the extended edition DVDs but I didn't rush out and buy audiobooks, special book editions, merch, etc. Lots of people don't feel the need to rush out and consume every new thing that's related to a fandom they like.

(Anonymous) 2025-10-16 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
You may be right that this is how OP feels, in which case thank you for the explanation.

That's not how it works. If you're a fan, you're gonna [...]

#notallfans. Personally, the only thing I've ever been apprehensive about as a fan is the quality and content of future canon. I can kind of see being apprehensive about things the core cast/creators might publicly say or do (i.e. I hope they don't say something shitty I will have to struggle to forget about when I look at their character, or I hope they don't land a major franchise role that will delay new seasons of the show indefinitely.) But being apprehensive about merch and other extra-textual stuff like that would never occur to me, personally.

(Anonymous) 2025-10-17 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
No? I know Swifties do that and so do you and OP, but the majority of fans don’t feel obligated to buy multiple variations of things that they already own, especially if the new version is a downgrade. New material or deep cuts or stuff that you missed the first time around and now it’s hard to find? Sure. Had issues with the old one that you hope are fixed now? Best of luck! Exact same books, but now read by people that you don’t want to listen to? Congratulations! This merch is not for you and you don’t have to engage with it! Use your money to buy something you’ll actually enjoy!

Sure, but then you can also say "nope, this isn't as good and I don't want it, not gonna buy it"? Like you don't have to have everything Just Because? And in this case a bonus "not financially supporting JKR" comes free with that conclusion.

I guess it's admirable that OP might be concerned for other people receiving a lower quality audiobook narration, even if it doesn't affect them in the slightest. But it's a little weird.
