It's crazy that I read this reply before reading the secret and mentally yelled Olivie and Kuranosuke my loveliessssssssss and ! ohh that's what that is about.

To be fair, bishounen are an archetype. Bishounen are meant to be pretty and not macho because that is a beauty standard so I think this is why there isn't a counterpart. It's the difference between a female character being a tomboy because she fights and has short hair and flat chest (sometimes) but still falls into popular archetypes like tsundere, etc. And a female character being all rugged and shit. First is appealing to a lot of dudes, latter not so much maybe. I'm not saying a male character who crossdresses can't be attractive to straight girls either but I guess average bishounen are more often.

Off the top of my head some other cishet male characters who crossdress are Mikoto from Princess Princess, and Ranka from Ouran Host Club if bis are ok. So that's more than the real life average I guess. But a lot of bishounen are really androgynous minus skirts.

DA

I'm... not sure why this is suddenly about bishounen specifically. Bishounen are plentiful, yes. And 99.9% of them conform to conventional gender standards in the same way kpop and western boyband prettyboys do.

There also exist genres that aren't animanga...

Because a lot of bishounen wear flowy garments and have long hair and are delicate faced?

Because this is also about cultural expectations. Traditionally the west is less likely to push an expectation of being tomboyish into a woman with interests deemed masc by a sexist society and short hair and independence than the east ie a masculine girl (tomboy) may not be regarded as masculine in the west and a feminine boy (bishounen) may not be regarded as feminine in the east (of course it goes for both in both cases with globalization)

Then you have the downright burly girl and the crossdresser boy and I guess both in this case appeal to rather specific niches

Yeah, bishounen are pretty but they're still conventionally masculine in pretty much every other way. Like, yeah, my fandoms have bishounen, but their fashion style is masculine, they participate in traditionally masculine jobs and activities, etc. There's nothing feminine about them other than the fact that they might have longer hair.
