Re: Favorite/Least Favorite adaptions

I'm usually underwhelmed by adaptations that change the intrinsic nature of the canon work. This is not to say that the adaptation is a bad piece of media, but... it feels like less of an adaptation and more an homage or riff on the original and should be marketed as such, IMO. So basically stuff like:

* Anne with an E - as an adaptation of the L.M. Montgomery Anne of Green Gables series
BBC Sherlock - as an adaptation of the Arthur Conan Doyle Sherlock Holmes stories
* Pride and Prejudice 2005 - a beautiful film, but dumbs down/modernizes Jane Austen's dialogue and humor as well as deliberately fudging the social context
* Clueless, which is a great movie but more homage than adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma
* Netflix's Persuasion... I'll be honest, I probably shouldn't list this here because I can't bring myself to watch it.

Adaptations I enjoyed:

* Stand By Me - again, not an exact adaptation of Stephen King's "The Body", but my god it was good.
* The Princess Bride - same as above!
* The 1980s Canadian Anne of Green Gables/Avonlea series, except for the third one that departed from the books. There are definitely some alterations from the books, but IMO they kept the spirit of it, the cast was excellent, and the changes helped tone down some of the repetitive themes and plot points.
* Grenada series Sherlock Holmes with Jeremy Brett
* Pride and Prejudice 1995
* Persuasion 1995

Mixed feelings:

* LOTR trilogy, where I don't like many of the departures from the books but I'm not a purist and I did enjoy the overall movies very much. Didn't feel the same way about the Hobbit films, which to me were rather clumsy, with poor pacing and didn't make the grade as decent popcorn films as a result.
* The Untamed as the live action version of "Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation" by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu - really brought the characters to life for me, the changes are controversial to say the least and many fans argue there are some significant changes to the main character. But having read the novel and watched the series, it's no context for me.

I hate Anne with an E so much. Such a terrible adaption. Total misunderstanding of most of the main characters. Ugh. The old tv miniserieses aren't perfect, but they are fairly good adaptions and just fun to watch. I'll stick with those.

Favorites: LOTR, 2020 Emma, Chocolat, The Batman, Princess Bride
Least favorites: Hunger Games (but especially Catching Fire). Jennifer Lawrence was so intrinsically not my Katniss and I just cannot rewatch Catching Fire because I hated it so much. Golden Compass (the casting was SO GOOD and then the script was just not).
Kind of meh on: Tragedy of Macbeth. It's cool and it does a lot of things I like, but I have yet to see a Macbeth adaptation that really gets the feeling of that play across for me.
