I felt similar. The Government and The Establishment and The Adults In Control felt much more solid and firm to my child mind. I understood what was going on with the people who were being mind controlled or blackmailed, but it seemed like there was so little resistance overall. Looking at it with adult eyes, especially after as OP mentioned the experiences of the last decade, it sadly seems all too realistic.
